Playing Catch Up

It's been a pretty active few months in Boston and I have let my blog suffer.  I am slowly going through the images I have made since May and will start posting some of the ones I like on here.

First up is a photo of President Obama during a speech in Boston while campaigning for then Senate candidate Edward Markey.  It can be challenging to get creative at these events.  Local press is usually positioned on a riser in the back of the room that is usually pretty far from the stage. There is often a side riser that will give you a different angle but bouncing between the two can be difficult, especially if it's a crowded event. But you work it the as hard as you can and try to get something that might stand out even if it just a little bit. I don't know if this did the trick but it was a photo of something other than just the podium.

Rub Some Dirt In It

Just one frame from the Bills Patriots game on Sunday.  Have a lot of other stuff from the past few months I have been meaning to share but this will have to do.

Occupy Boston - still here

The occupation aspect of it is over, for now. The camp is long gone, Dewey Square is no longer a big mud patch.  The green space was re-sodded within 48 hours of the Occupy Camp being cleared.    But the movement still exists.  Maybe not as well centered as it was when it had a camp but they are still out there. 

I found myself covering a small march a few weeks back.  Word was that there would be action this time, but no one was saying what that action was.  The march was a reaction to the MBTA's fare increases and cuts in service which would have a fairly big affect on the community that the transit system services.    Overall the march went pretty smoothly.  They did march in the road, causing minor traffic delays but the Boston Police let them continue peacefully.  There numbers were fairly low but they did pick up some sympathizers along the way.  The action as it turned out was when they all entered the Park Street MBTA station and hopped the turn-style.  A direct protest of the MBTA changes.

Weekly Rentals - Tiffany and Jenna

I have been slow to update the blog here for various reasons.  Primarily because I have been busy with work.    Which is great, but I need to be better about putting at least one or two photos a week up here.  Cause I know you are all waiting for my updates.  Right?

Anyway speaking of updates I am posting more from the Weekly Rentals project I have been working on.  To make a long story short the town and the motel owner have come to an amicable solution with regards to the residents.  The owner promised to update the building so that it will qualify for long term stays.  The town said they had no interest in evicting residents and held a housing workshop to try in an attempt to help the motel residents find something more stable.  Life goes on at the motel for now.

I met Tiffany and her daughter on one of the my first visits to the motel.  She would often hang out in the management office during the day and chat with the manager Deb.  She has lived in the motel since October 2010 and is only able to remain because Deb has offered her reduced rent.  When I last chatted with Tiffany she was pregnant again and still not working and told me that if she is forced out of the West Yarmouth Lodgings then her only other option would be a shelter.

Old Timey Baseball

Just a little break from my ongoing story.  Shot the Cubs v Sox game on Saturday at Fenway.  The teams donned circa 1918 style uniforms as a nod to the year that the Cubs were last in town.  They even went so far as to bring in old announcers with big megaphones that walked around and called out the players at bat.  Pretty cool.  I shot the introductions with a lens that I thought would fit the mood.  It adds a heavy vignette on the edges of the photo and allows me to shoot in a shallow depth of field.  My intent was to give the images that old timey feel.  Have a look and let me know what you think.

Football season

The football season is well underway and I am behind on this blog so have a football photo.  I will try and be better about my updates.

That time I got to shoot Radiohead...

Aka one of the best assignments I have ever had.

Really it, was just awesome.

I listened to a lot of Radiohead in my time and jumped on the chance to shoot them.  Right up front, only allowed to shoot the first three songs like at most concerts these days but it was fantastic.  Got to watch the rest in the press area on closed circuit.  Did I also mention that Christine (my lady) was right there with me working for the competition, and we had just gone to see Wilco the night before at Tanglewood.

Best weekend ever and I just dug up the photos and put them in my PhotoShelter.  Here are two from that night.

My Easter

I did a 9-5 shift for the Boston Herald on Easter Sunday and it was a pretty full day. Started with Catholic Easter Mass en espanol, then on to a shooting scene in Dorchester that got a little heated, then a call on the scanner of a three alarm fire in Malden. Got home ate a burrito and then onto a Wilco concert in Providence with Christine (sadly no pics of that).

Old school

I picked up a 'new' camera this summer. It is a 1950 Czechoslovakian Flexoret. It is a TLR that shoots medium format film. Up until this point my only foray into the world of medium format was with a holga. They can be fun but there is just too much guessing for my tastes. The flexoret gives full manual control but has no light meter so you need one with you. Anyway I put two rolls through it and $60 dollars later (processing - eesh) I have my results. Here are a few that I liked.

Okay so its a day late but I have been busy, trying to make up for the total lack of sleep in the past 6 days. We hit the pavement at 6am for the Inauguration.
