Winter is Going. I Hope.

If you live pretty much anywhere in the United States then you know that this winter has not been a kind one. Arctic temps, brutal storms, you know, winter. Well it's slowly, very slowly on it's way out and I have decided to do a little look back on some photos I shot. From routine storm coverage, spot news, a lot of hockey and a thing called The Donkey Show. The weather and the assignments have kept me on my toes, but that's what makes life interesting.

Have a Pint!

Back in September I asked my friend Sarah, who works for Mayflower Brewing Company in Plymouth, Mass, if I could take some photos of the brewing process as a personal project. I am a total beer geek and have friends that brew their own beer but have never seen the process on a larger scale.

A few days later Sarah arranged for me to meet with Head Brewer Ryan Gwozdz.  I pulled into the parking lot at 7:15 and Ryan was already hard at work. He offered me a cup of coffee and gave me a quick tour and then went back to brewing while I followed him around with my camera.

He was starting a new batch of Mayflower IPA which is one of their staples and really tasty. It was great to see the process from the very beginning. Not surprisingly it is very calculated. It involves watching the clock, watching temperatures, measuring ingredients, and of course lots of cleaning.  After Ryan got the IPA batch under way I went and spent a little time with the crew bottling and packing cases. It's always refreshing to work with small companies who are willing to give you access to their entire process.

Mayflower is a great local craft brewery who has put Plymouth firmly on the beer map and it's nice to have them in my backyard.  Be sure to stop by their brewery if you have a chance. They do tastings, tours, and of course sell beers. http://mayflowerbrewing.com/visit-us.php#tastings

Oh and if you are a woman who loves beer or is interested in learning more about it and live on or near Cape Cod then reach out to Sarah who runs the Girls Pint Out Cape Cod. It's a beer tasting meetup group for women. https://twitter.com/CapeCodGPO

Enjoy the photos and let me know what you think!

2012 Year in Review Part 1

Well 2012 is almost in the books as they say.  It's been quite a year.  Celebrated my first wedding anniversary, worked with some fantastic new clients, did a little travelling, and worked with and photographed some amazing and inspiring people.  Though the work still has it's ups and downs I am still happy to be doing what I love.

I have put together a gallery of some of my personal favorites from the past year.  Still have some digging to do but will start with this batch.  Hope you enjoy and as always, I am more than happy to hear any feedback.

Sox

Thought this sums up how September is going for the Sox right now.

Still waiting

I realize it is still early in the season but I am probably not the only one that is just begging for the weather to turn warm and stay that way.  You would think I would be used to it now, after all, I am a New Englander through and through.

But it's those days that get you.  You know the ones.  The sky is blue, the sun is out, and most importantly the wind isn't blowing 50mph and it is still April.  People are out playing frisbee in shorts, driving with their windows down blaring that album they have been keeping to themselves all winter.  You think to yourself, wow, its gorgeous out, this is great, spring is finally here.  But it's just a tease.  You have to wait.  The wind picks up, turns a different direction, the sky clouds over, rain starts to fall, you roll up the car windows, put on the defroster in the car and you are back to waiting for the sun to come out again.  It's getting close.

Tea for two hundred

I just looked back at the last few days and I have covered a lot of ground.  Some portraits, a Tea Party rally, two Red Sox games and some quality time at a local McDonald's.  I wanted to share some images I made at the Tea Party rally with you all.

It was held on Friday April, 15 2011.  A day that is, traditionally, the tax filing deadline set by the IRS.  That deadline was postponed a few days because of a holiday in Washington, D.C.. but the they went ahead with their rally on the 15th.  It was held on Boston Common and hosted by several local right wing radio hosts.

I anticipated a fairly decent crowd but when I arrived I only found 200 to 300 people.  The surprise of the rally was a group of pro union demonstrators that set up shop directly in front of the rotunda.  I mean literally in front of the speaker, front and center.  They had big signs and bullhorns and were there to be heard.  They were few but they were often louder than the speakers at Tea Party rally.  The police stepped in to make sure no one got out of hand and to create a line between the Tea Party rally folks and the protesters.  It made for some good photos.

Have a look and let me know what you think.  Oh and I am on Twitter now:  @matthealeyphoto or you can add me using the button below..

Grab Shot

As in, grab the camera and take a shot cause that plane is going to pass by in a second and that light is really cool.  This while I was heading into a store to pick up my dinner while working in Boston.

It's been a pretty miserable winter here in New England.  Almost every outdoor assignment is accompanied by winter light.  Flat.  Dull.  Gray.  So I got excited when I noticed the buildings of the South End lighting up with the warm glow of that magic hour light.  Here is hoping it is a sign of more to come.  I am getting a hankering for some lens flare.

Just Bust A Move

I photographed tryouts for the Boston Celtics Dance Team this past Saturday.  Hundreds of young women vie for the privilege to dance with the squad on the parquet at the TD Garden during Celtics home games.  Pretty intense try-outs in which the dancers must learn a routine and then perform it in front of a panel of judges and then they find out immediately if they get to move on to the next round.

The long and short of it

Two different looks of the same field event.  One shot with a wide angle lens right down in the sand and the other shot with a long lens from the other side of the track.

Sox dude

Little late on updating but here is a pic from my first Red Sox game of the season.  It was a long wet night but it felt good to be back at Fenway, well except for the foul balls.   The scary scary foul balls.
Here is a link to the start of the article and a little gallery:

I have started to slowly fill out my archives at http://www.photoshelter.com/c/matthealey/gallery-list and will soon be updating my website http://matthealey.com so keep an eye out.  Thanks for looking.
