Winter is Going. I Hope.

If you live pretty much anywhere in the United States then you know that this winter has not been a kind one. Arctic temps, brutal storms, you know, winter. Well it's slowly, very slowly on it's way out and I have decided to do a little look back on some photos I shot. From routine storm coverage, spot news, a lot of hockey and a thing called The Donkey Show. The weather and the assignments have kept me on my toes, but that's what makes life interesting.

Have a Pint!

Back in September I asked my friend Sarah, who works for Mayflower Brewing Company in Plymouth, Mass, if I could take some photos of the brewing process as a personal project. I am a total beer geek and have friends that brew their own beer but have never seen the process on a larger scale.

A few days later Sarah arranged for me to meet with Head Brewer Ryan Gwozdz.  I pulled into the parking lot at 7:15 and Ryan was already hard at work. He offered me a cup of coffee and gave me a quick tour and then went back to brewing while I followed him around with my camera.

He was starting a new batch of Mayflower IPA which is one of their staples and really tasty. It was great to see the process from the very beginning. Not surprisingly it is very calculated. It involves watching the clock, watching temperatures, measuring ingredients, and of course lots of cleaning.  After Ryan got the IPA batch under way I went and spent a little time with the crew bottling and packing cases. It's always refreshing to work with small companies who are willing to give you access to their entire process.

Mayflower is a great local craft brewery who has put Plymouth firmly on the beer map and it's nice to have them in my backyard.  Be sure to stop by their brewery if you have a chance. They do tastings, tours, and of course sell beers. http://mayflowerbrewing.com/visit-us.php#tastings

Oh and if you are a woman who loves beer or is interested in learning more about it and live on or near Cape Cod then reach out to Sarah who runs the Girls Pint Out Cape Cod. It's a beer tasting meetup group for women. https://twitter.com/CapeCodGPO

Enjoy the photos and let me know what you think!

Year In Review Part 2

Finally getting around to posting the remainder of my year in review. It is admittedly a loose edit but thought it was a good representation of my year.

Thanks again for looking and for all your support. And I hope everyone out there has a great 2013. Feedback or questions always welcome.

And again for best results view in full screen by clicking on the four arrows in the bottom right corner of the slideshow.

Occupy Boston - still here

The occupation aspect of it is over, for now. The camp is long gone, Dewey Square is no longer a big mud patch.  The green space was re-sodded within 48 hours of the Occupy Camp being cleared.    But the movement still exists.  Maybe not as well centered as it was when it had a camp but they are still out there.

I found myself covering a small march a few weeks back.  Word was that there would be action this time, but no one was saying what that action was.  The march was a reaction to the MBTA's fare increases and cuts in service which would have a fairly big affect on the community that the transit system services.    Overall the march went pretty smoothly.  They did march in the road, causing minor traffic delays but the Boston Police let them continue peacefully.  There numbers were fairly low but they did pick up some sympathizers along the way.  The action as it turned out was when they all entered the Park Street MBTA station and hopped the turn-style.  A direct protest of the MBTA changes.

Here are a few pictures I made along the way.

Bringing it back

I have spent countless hours lately taking the hundreds of DVD's I have of my old images and dumping said images onto a networked hard drive.  It's tedious, but it has been eye opening.  It has been interesting to watch my shooting evolve over the years.  I have dug up a lot of older images that I forgot about or that I just never got around to posting on the blog so I am going to share some of them on here.

NOTE - That kid in the background, who's name I didn't catch, was running in circles at absolute full speed.  It was awesome.  I think sugar was involved.

Needham, MA: Sorry don't have names for this one.  It was taken at a holiday celebration on the Needham town common.  These kids were looking into this gated flood light that had a weird green tinge to it.  If I was one of those kids then I would have been dropping bugs onto the light to see what happens.  Photo by Matthew Healey.

Watertown, MA: Ruby Baboian (R) gets choked up after seeing the Waltham American Legion Band stop to play in front of her house as friends Mary Alemian (C) and Anahid Tumberian applaud during the Memorial Day Parade along Mount Auburn Street on Monday May, 25 2009.  Baboian's husband Jacob (not pictured) used to play in the band but he is physically no longer able to and was inside the house.  Photo by Matthew Healey

Just a sweet moment that I totally happened upon.  These three women were really excited about the parade and well I loved Anahid's choice of head wear.  But the story was about the band.

Thanks for looking and as always comments and critiques are welcome.  Oh and if anyone out there reading this has any good suggestions on photo database management software that is affordable (read: free) then let me know.  PhotoMechanic is wonderful but too slow when working off of a server.  I have toyed around with Picassa from google but it doesn't play well with networked drives either.

Reveah Beach

Spent some quality time at Revere Beach the past few days. Hadn't been there in ages and have to say it looked nice. Nice and clean, groomed sand. Nice crowd for a weekday. I was shooting a sand castle contest and was asked to shoot a feature at the beach too. Came across these guys. Hope you enjoy.

Inauguration Day - 012009

(012009 Washington, D.C.) Fruta Abdush-Shahid (L) and Faiz Adbush-Shahid of Baltimore, MD watch the inauguration of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on a large screen near the Washington Monument on Monday morning. Photo by Matthew Healey

Okay so its a day late but I have been busy, trying to make up for the total lack of sleep in the past 6 days. We hit the pavement at 6am for the Inauguration. It was cold, windy, dusty, cold, and cold....and worth every second. Here is a quick slideshow I just put together. The photos are pretty much in order of the day. Let me know what you think.
