Safe

Just a pic I happened to come across from this past summer.  It was a Legion game in mid June and as usual the fields were all but dust.  Will have some more pics up here in the next day or so, just waiting for some of them to run so stay tuned.

Football season

The football season is well underway and I am behind on this blog so have a football photo.  I will try and be better about my updates.

Happy Birthday America (Belated)

So my 4th of July like most of my colleagues was spent shooting photos. I was stationed at the Hatch Shell to photograph the Boston Pops concert featuring Toby Keith. Huge crowds camp out all day to try and get a spot close to stage. The concert concludes with a huge fireworks display that you can't see from in front of the stage. So once the fireworks start up, the thousands and thousands of people that were camped in one spot for 10 hours rush to the banks of the Charles River to see the show. What remains is a bit surreal looking. Maybe a few hundred people wandering around or staying in their lawn chairs looking up at a big screen to see the fireworks broadcast as smoke and confetti drift through the air.

Here is a little before:

Sorry, no cheerleaders this time

I just had a few rolls of 120 film developed and wanted to share. Yes film, yes big film. No I can't develop my own, and I feel shame for that. But the good folks at Hunt's Photo did a pretty darn good job and they don't charge you an arm and a leg.

The first photo is from a Holga. A cheap plastic camera that shoots 120 film. The lens is terrible, you can't really focus it, and the shutter and aperture are always f11 at 1/100th second. With practice, you can get some nice stuff from a Holga. Or in my case, with luck. This is one of the only ones that came out, and I really dig it. Shot on 1600 film last year I think.

The second two come from the same roll on a real working TLR (twin lens reflex) camera.  Has shutter and aperture controls.  And it works great.  The first shot was taken outside a rally for President Barack Obama at a high school in Nashua, New Hampshire.  I ended up losing the names of the women.  They knew they weren't getting into the school but were still hoping to see the president.

The last one is from the NHL 2010 Bridgestone Winter Classic at Fenway Park between the Flyers and the Bruins.  I wish I had more interesting stuff from there but I did have a game to shoot.

Let me know what you think.

Just Bust A Move

I photographed tryouts for the Boston Celtics Dance Team this past Saturday.  Hundreds of young women vie for the privilege to dance with the squad on the parquet at the TD Garden during Celtics home games.  Pretty intense try-outs in which the dancers must learn a routine and then perform it in front of a panel of judges and then they find out immediately if they get to move on to the next round.

The long and short of it

Two different looks of the same field event.  One shot with a wide angle lens right down in the sand and the other shot with a long lens from the other side of the track.

Surf's up brah!

Nice little groundswell has been hitting Rhode Island for the past couple days.  I managed to make it out for a total of seven hours in two days.  My arms are sore and I am exhausted because it has been so long but it was fun, and I caught a bunch more than I expected.  Got one nice pic from where I was surfing.  Can't tell you though cause, it's a secret.  Not really but people get all upset if you put up surf spot names.  So I will leave it out.

That time I got to shoot Radiohead...

Aka one of the best assignments I have ever had.

Really it, was just awesome.

I listened to a lot of Radiohead in my time and jumped on the chance to shoot them.  Right up front, only allowed to shoot the first three songs like at most concerts these days but it was fantastic.  Got to watch the rest in the press area on closed circuit.  Did I also mention that Christine (my lady) was right there with me working for the competition, and we had just gone to see Wilco the night before at Tanglewood.

Best weekend ever and I just dug up the photos and put them in my PhotoShelter.  Here are two from that night.

Celtics Practice

I realize I tend to be a bit sports heavy on my blog.  Not sure why that is but here is yet another sports pic, of sorts.   It is from a Celtics practice the day after a loss against Cleveland.  There isn't usually much action at a practice.  The team practices for awhile while the press waits in what is essentially a waiting room with no view of the practice court.  When the team is done with real practice they let the media in.  There are sometimes a few players still shooting maybe playing 'HORSE' or whatever.  But it's not really practice.  Then the players and coaches come over and do their interviews or sometimes they don't.  It really varies.

Here is one pic I liked.  Not sure if it ran.

What's in there?

Just came across this photo from last summer.  For my non photographer friends this scene is fairly common at certain events.  We usually refer to a situation like this as a 'scrum'.  As in a rugby scrum when the two teams link arms and charge at each other and fight for the ball.  But instead of a ball, it is a photo subject.

What makes it unusual however is just how orderly it is.  That's because it is held at a place that normally hosts a lot of media, so they do their best to accommodate.  No battling to talk to the subject, the subject comes to a few of them then everyone else files around.  The venue even supplies extra step ladders which is great.

A scrum, but not really.  More like a swarm.

Still reading?  Curious to know who they are talking to?

Find out by clicking right here.

Sox dude

Little late on updating but here is a pic from my first Red Sox game of the season.  It was a long wet night but it felt good to be back at Fenway, well except for the foul balls.   The scary scary foul balls.
Here is a link to the start of the article and a little gallery:

So I had some time off today and decided to check out the Tea Party in Providence.  Decent sized crowd.  Anyway I am posting a bunch on my photoshelter account, here is one and this is the link to the full gallery:Providence Tea Party

My favorite softball photo thus far

....that is all.

Okay a couple details.  It is from 2008 it is Wellesley in the red and Needham in the blue.  Bad throw to the really close cutoff at third on a pop out by the Needham batter.  Base runner goes to back to third in attempt to tag up and cleat meets shin.  Notice that the girl is wearing shin pads though, so she was okay.  A lot going on here though.

One other note.  I have noticed my photos are looking way oversharpened on this blog.  Not sure why.  Working on that.  Thanks for looking.

My Easter

I did a 9-5 shift for the Boston Herald on Easter Sunday and it was a pretty full day. Started with Catholic Easter Mass en espanol, then on to a shooting scene in Dorchester that got a little heated, then a call on the scanner of a three alarm fire in Malden. Got home ate a burrito and then onto a Wilco concert in Providence with Christine (sadly no pics of that).

Celtics

I just wanted to put something different up here. So here is a pic from the last Celtics game I shot. Good game against the Lakers. Celtics lost but it was close.

"Gas up the truck!" That was the chant of the night at the Scott Brown election night party. A reference to Scott Brown's green pick-up truck featured in the Republican U.S. Senate candidates' advertisements. Quite a crowd and quite an upset. Sometimes covering politics is even better than covering sports. Here are a few photos from the night with a slant towards the crowd.
